CC CHRONiCLES: CC #2 on Reverbnation’s Folk/Alt-Country Charts / Ottawa 2013

Published by cctadmin on May 15th, 2013

I enjoy when life kisses you with an unexpected surprise.  I returned from Ottawa on Mother’s Day to a slew of emails I intend on catching up on (trust me I will!); in amongst these emails was a notification from Reverbnation indicating my music currently holds the #2 spot on the Ottawa Folk/Alt-Country charts.

It reminds of a past where I never had the courage to extend himself in any capacity, much less in a way that could subject me to a lot of criticism.  I was a dreamer for sure, but I could never bring myself to fully share.  Our value is never, or should never be based on something outside of ourselves, like accolades or awards – yet there is something to be said for the feeling you derive from discovering that you can face your fears; that its ok to celebrate surprising yourself from time to time.

Here’s to surprising even ourselves!

Check out the profile below at www.reverbnation.com for an inside look & thank you to those who are tuning in as I go along.

COMING SOON: “TiNY ARMY: THE D. HOLMES SESSiONS”

Published by cctadmin on January 22nd, 2013

There is a light at the end of the tunnel as DARREN HOLMES & I begin to wrap up a lot of the recordings for our project ‘TiNY ARMY: THE D. HOLMES SESSiONS’.   Just only a few weeks ago he & I celebrated one year anniversary of this inspired collaboration; as those who have been following can attest, its been a steady process.

I’m most thankful to D for the countless hours he continues to put into these special recordings of ours.  It’s a labour of our mutual love for music, expression & the various talents of the ‘tiny army’ of folks who are involved, in whatever capacity; be it as songwriters, singers, musicians, creative go-to’s – the contributions are amazing & I could’t be more thrilled to see what we have been able to accomplish in a years time.  A lot of fond memories, a lot of coffee.  :-)

While we are nearing the end of a particular chapter in this work, next up we finesse what we have & begin thinking about what we do with this collection, how we go about introducing the world to it & in what fashion.  It will continue to involve our creativity & commitment, but this is something we are inspired to see through, so while I can’t confirm when ‘TiNY ARMY‘ will see the light of day, I do know its coming.  Stay tuned…. & thank you all for your continued support.

Much love, CC

xoxo

CC CHRONiCLES: FiVE EASY PiECES @ NORVA CENTRE / CC, DOUG & ANN @ THE ORANGE TOAD

Published by cctadmin on January 1st, 2013

Had some back-to-back gigs this past week here in Flin Flon; it was a busy Christmas holiday & a lot of fun creatively.  First, FIVE EASY PiECES (minus one easy piece, our friend CHAD PABiANEK, who was sick with a flu) played in front of a crowd of folks @ NORVA CENTRE, the Northern Visual Arts Centre.  Christmas cheer was the goal of the night – & the event was called ‘HOME FOR THE HOLiDAYS: A NiGHT OF MUSIC w/ DOUG & ANN & FRiENDS.  Several folks got up to sing.

Next up, the following morning, I accompanied DOUG & ANN to THE ORANGE TOAD again, to their monthly Saturday gig.  From about 2-4 we played a couple of sets of originals & covers, which again was a lot of fun.  BIG thanks to the folks who helped set us up & for DOUG & ANN for giving me the opportunity to join them.

CC CHRONiCLES: FiVE EASY PiECES @ JOHNNY’S SOCiAL CLUB / December 8th 2012

Published by cctadmin on January 1st, 2013

A few weeks back or so, FiVE EASY PiECES got up in front of a crowd of about 40 people or so, to sing @ JOHNNY’S SOCiAL CLUB.  In fact, we were the first musical act to play in front of a crowd at this joint, & the night was certainly a lot of fun in terms of getting to sing & perform.  Thanks to the folks who organized this & invited us to play; chances are good that we’ll get to play this venue at least once more in the next couple of months.

CC CHRONiCLES: DiSCOVERiNG DOUG’S AUTOHARP & PiCKiNG THE WiLDWOOD FLOWER

Published by cctadmin on November 6th, 2012

So I’m learning to play the autoharp, thanks to Doug for introducing it to me at our weekly jam/rehearsals.  I can’t explain why, but I’ve always loved the sweet sound of this instrument; back to my days of listening to THE CARTER FAMiLY & MOTHER MAYBELLE play so so beautifully.  Last night FiVE EASY PiECES got together & worked out several new (& old ) tunes to add to our repertoire, including ‘Wildwood Flower’, allowing me the perfect opportunity to get the hang of the autoharp while singing the classic tune.  Check out some images from last nights music fest.

CC CHRONiCLES: FiVE EASY PiECES play COFFEE HOUSE

Last Friday marked the official debut performance of FiVE EASY PiECES; Northminster Church was the place & fundraising for Flin Flon’s Women’s Resource Centre was the name of the cause.

All in all, the turn out was wonderful & the evenings acts all displayed a range of talent & musicality.  In short, I enjoyed the opportunity to come out & engage with the community & to share the music of FiVE EASY PiECES as a part of it.

FiVE EASY PiECES will also be playing future shows for those who missed out on the Coffee House or would simply like to follow us along.  Below are the dates & locations – with more details to come!

Check out some photos below:

November 23rd: ORANGE TOAD

December 27th: NORVA CENTRE

January 11th: UNiTED CHURCH

CC CHRONiCLES: THE FORMATiON of ‘FiVE EASY PiECES’

Published by cctadmin on September 17th, 2012

I’ve been fortunate since settling into life as I now know it in Manitoba, to be connected musically with some really talented folks here.  I’ve mentioned DOUG & ANN before – they are the glue that has brought five of us together for these jam sessions, all which have taken place on Sunday evenings, up at their little log cabin in woods on the outskirts of town.  In addition to DOUG & ANN there are a couple of very gifted musicians by the name of DEREK KEMP & CHAD PABiANEK – these fella’s have been collaborating as a singing/songwriter duo (who go by the name ‘NATURE’S CHiLDREN’) for a couple of years now.  (Check out their video ON MY WAY below.)  Rounding out the four of us is myself, ever happy to sit in & jam along with everyone.  These sessions are very loose, yet the goal is to eventually take whatever end product these times bring & play them for a crowd here in town.  DOUG has christened us ‘FiVE EASY PiECES’.

Last night was yet another great end to the weekend – like I said its interesting to see what kind of musical magic results from these inspired sessions & if anything I enjoy the opportunity to connect & let the sweet sounds take me away while I’m here up North. In addition to a few videos included here, check out some selected images taken from last night.

CC CHRONiCLES : CC DOES ‘FLONSTOCK’ / AUGUST 17th, 2012

Published by cctadmin on September 8th, 2012

Life can be ironic at times.  At the thought of moving back to Flin Flon in the past I would have scoffed.  ”When PiGS FLY!”  Pigs have indeed flown & I have been back for over a month now.  What’s even more ironic somehow is that within a short time after my return, I was being invited to perform in the community.  But I’m getting a bit ahead of myself.

Back in Ottawa I had spent the past couple of years performing live every so often (Club Saw Gallery, Elmdale House Tavern, The Rainbow, Mercury Lounge, Backyards of Chinatown to name some), be it doing my solo folk stuff, or within DANNiEL OiCKLE’S song cycle ‘CORRUPTiON of FLESH‘, alongside him & fellow fawn OLEXANDRA PRUCHNiCKY.  I had a lot of fun in these experiences but to get these gigs you had to a) seek out venues, and b) do a lot in terms of promoting it & ensuring you even had a crowd.  I’m definitely interested in performing in front of a audience but I will say being a professional musician is not a cake-walk & I also contend with some mild stage fright.  What I enjoy more than being ‘on’ in front of people is the opportunity to simply ‘play’ with other musicians & play my kind of music.  I just love to sing.

You could imagine my surprise when I got a phone call in my first week back here in Manitoba, from an old friend (we’re talking elementary school old friend) who now lives in Saskatoon where he manages a bar called The Fez on Broadway.  Turns out he & some of his buddies were looking to bring some musical/community fun & spirit up north here. The idea was to invite a variety of musical acts from all over, for a 3 day outdoor music fest (on a beautiful vast acreage)  - & they were calling it ‘FLONSTOCK‘.  I said yes right away – I mean it had been years since I really spoke with this friend but had to ask myself how often I would be asked to do something like this.  Plus – it seemed a great opportunity to re-introduce myself to the Flin Flon community in a way.  And like I said, in Ottawa I had been accustomed to doing a lot that prep work for my own shows myself – here all I had to do was be prepared and show up!  Right on!

I called up my local musical friends DOUG & ANN, two seasoned musicians are used to playing here & there in town – I wanted to see if they would be interested in making my solo thing a TRiO of sorts.  Like I said – I had made a sort of personal goal to play with other musicians as its not something I am familiar with yet I wanted to also up my showmanship.  DOUG & ANN are the perfect pair & my kind of people so I was really happy they said yes & before I knew it I was over at their place a couple of times in the two weeks leading up to the 3 day fest, jamming & working on our set list.  In the end I think we had prepared enough to offer the crowd a loose, acoustic set.

August 17th came round & when we played for the small crowd of just under 100 people in total it was surreal.  Keep in mind I left Flin Flon in 1997 after I graduated (I know I am dating myself) & other than the annual visit home for Christmas or summer I had never really been out & about like this – so it was a real homecoming in a lot of ways.  I really have no idea what the crowd thought after we wrapped up our set, but I will always remember the three of us sitting up there on that stage, the back drop being this wide open field & sky of pinky-purple-yellow as the sun went down…. the mosquitos were swarming around our faces like mad, yet I kept thinking ‘This is it – I’ll remember this forever…I’m here…& for better or for worse I am gonna try  to do my best.”  I am so grateful I had DOUG & ANN to be by my side; and for LEMi & all the people who put the event on.  After our set I could relax & kick back for the night & enjoy the rock acts that came after us – I am so happy with the pics I got that night.  We were more folky/blues/country but there were some fine rock bands from Saskatoon, Flin Flon, and even a solo guy on guitar all the way from Edmonton who kicked off the night.  I’ll never forget it. Period.

Check out selected pics from that night – starting with a few from our preliminary rehearsals at DOUG & ANN’s.

CC CHRONiCLES: MANiTOBA LiFE / SCENES FROM JAM SESSiON @ DOUG & ANN’S

Published by cctadmin on September 3rd, 2012

Last night I returned to DOUG & ANN’S humble abode, a tiny cottage just outside of town.  To say I’ve known DOUG & esp ANN for years is an understatement; ANN was like a second mother to me growing up & I spent years playing, eating & sleeping over under her roof.  Her daughter CHARLOTTE (aka CHAR, CHiCLETTE, CHOCOLATE, CHAR-TiTS) is my oldest friend – & although she’s living it up permanently in Australia now I remain close to her & her family here back home.  I’m grateful they are here in fact.  DOUG & ANN are big time music lovers - DOUG is reputable for his skills as a musician as well as a teacher of sorts, helping a lot of kids over the years explore music.  Together he & ANN  play all over town together; he himself has been in several bands, most recently one called HONEYWAGON.  They rock.  As soon as I returned home I made my way to their place with my guitar in hand, ready to relax, eat some delicious grub & get right into jamming it out in their living room.  With them it feels like home.

Since being back the three of us have gathered a couple of times, even getting up on stage at FLONSTOCK, a local musical extravaganza that I had been invited to perform at on August 17th.  I thought it was a great opportunity to extend myself to the community after living away for so long but I knew that the deal would be sweeter if I had some musical counterparts to join me - DOUG & ANN are my style of people and musicians so I was really happy they obliged.  FLONSTOCK was a great night – I’ll always remember us sitting up their in our trio, mosquitos by the dozen biting our faces as we played on through.  The word ‘surreal’ best sums it up.

But I digress – as FLONSTOCK was a different story.  Last night was a whole other experience.  Joining us were a couple of young lads that DOUG has known for some time in his years providing musical guidance at school.  DEREK & CHAD; two incredibly talented guys came over & with them they brought their instruments as well as songs they have written together in their time collaborating.   DOUG pulled out his mandolin & banjo, ANN her base guitar – and I cracked open my little nylon string & we proceeded to share in song; a selection of originals as well as covers of classic blues, country & rock.  I had a great night & hope to do more of this in the future.  Here are a few choice shots from the night , taken on my iPhone.
